Hard Rock band Budgie in the USA,1977.
A band that everybody in the mid 70s seem
to know about but they never really
sold many records with just the one UK top 30 album
In For The Kill in 1974
I saw Budgie twice around this period and they
were a good live band and very loud.
Full of big riffs that are probably more
Metal than Hard Rock at Times.
Nice to see some Budgie here. I love their 1st five albums and to me, in that period, they were the equal of their contemporaries. 'The other Tony' was an incredible riffmeister, and i always hoped he & Burke Shelley might work together again at some point but sadly with Burke's passing this year it'll never come to pass. I read that Steve Williams unfortunately suffered a stroke a few weeks back too. Wishing him a speedy recovery.
ReplyDeleteThank you UFO Steve for the post and all you contribute here. I too saw them around this time, opening for the Babys on their first US tour, promoting their debut album and with John Waite playing bass along with lead vox. My memory of Budgie is the same--pounding and loud, their rhythmic style a strong counter to the Babys' more melodic style.
ReplyDeleteThey outshone the headliner a bit, having had more road time in. The Babys were a little ragged at times, with Wally Stocker missing a couple lead cues. Overall a solid night of British boogie rock riffing from both bands, before the Babys went more AOR later on.
Thanks always good to hear these old contract memories
DeleteGood to see budgie back on this site, its been a while,Heres a little request does anybody have any live shows from when graig goldy from dio joined on guitar about 2008 to 2011 i think, happy hunting.
ReplyDeleteThere are a few around For this time period Ive found two so far
DeleteSad too hear that steve williams has been ill as well, wonder if this means there will be no more from budgie now,I was kind of hoping we would get some sort of collective release of unreleased songs or demos maybe, some of there live shows in the past they played new songs that never made it onto the albums.
