Excellent sounding FM Radio Broadcast of Budgie
at the Global Village,London,1974
Originally a vinyl Bootleg featuring six fairly
lengthy tracks full of heavyweight riffs mixed
with a touch of Prog and even some
(Quo style) boogie.
An all-round very enjoyable show.
This great live show was included on the official 'Heavier Than Air' 2-CD compilation of radio sessions & live recordings, so that was likely the source for that vinyl bootleg.
ReplyDeleteWhilst I like Quo, they were a unit who did one thing well; the trademark 'eads down see you at the end boogie. Nothing wrong with that, they were great at that style, but because of their singular focus i find your comparison does Budgie a disservice.
70's Budgie were a far more musically ambitious band than Quo; they had an incredible singer in the late Burke Shelly, a genuine guitar hero in Tony Bourge & could pull off thoughful acoustic ballads, punishingly heavy rifferama, funky groove or more progressive material, all without sacrificing any of their musical identity.
They did share many of the same influences, cut their teeth on the same circuit during the same time, and had a fondness for "the 'eavy stuff", but the scope of Budgie's overall sound sets them firmly apart from Quo's mono-dimensional approach.
Hi anonymous did not mean to disrespect budgie just try to describe the variable style of budgie and because quo are popular here I thought it might help people to give them a try
DeleteThanks for the coment
Keep on rockin steve
Hi Steve,
Delete'disrespect' is too strong a word, particularly as i love a little classic Quo at times too.
I just meant Budgie were a far more musically expansive group so that comparison could be a little misleading, though they definitely did share similar attributes at times.
To me Budgie share more in common with Zep/Sabbath, while Quo were more in a similar lineage to AC/DC for instance. All great bands & likely to appeal to fans of each other, but quite distinct too.
Thanks for putting this up,Dont think the whole show has been put up before,All I got is the track BREADFAN from another source, probadly you tube,Never seen whole show up before, well done you.
ReplyDeleteThe other anonymous not quite right, only 2 songs from global village on the heavier than air compilation cd,Also I disagree with his view of status quo,Quo and Budgie are 2 of my favourite bands and I glad that ufo steve/quo steve puts lots of quo stuff up on this site,Well done mate and keep them coming.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, you're right about 'Heavier Than Air', my mistake. I haven't played it for a while & the memory ain't all it once was.
DeleteI wasn't denigrating Quo in any way in my comments, in fact i finished by saying that Budgie & Quo were 'great bands & likely to appeal to fans of each other'. I was merely pointing out that whilst both bands overlapped stylistically at points they also did things individually that the other wouldn't have done.
It's the first disc of the official "Radio Sessions 1974 & 1978" double CD on Noteworthy Records which has this complete Global Village show on it , not "Heavier Than Air" which has just 2 songs.
