I'm Cutting Out To A Place In The Country...

A soundboard recording of the
Welsh Heavy Rockers in Birmingham 1979.
It was the first live performance with guitarist
John Thomas.
Pretty good lively performance and I'm sure
it was played at ear shattering volume on the night.

  1. This was the first gig with guitarist John Thomas. Also the track listing is missing track 2 (which is Pyramids), as there are 10 tracks, not 9.

  3. There are 10 tracks in the download.
There are 9 tracks listed on the back cd cover.
Pyramids is track 2 an instrumental that lasts for a minute (if you're lucky).

    1. I have a 1st gen copy of this show. Two songs are "cut" "Pyramids" is only 1:08 & "Melt The Ice Away" (which this version is missing) is only 2:59

  4. Well there you go then, that clears that up,Look out for a 3 cd show called nightflight 3 shows put together from that tour, these are the only live shows containing all the songs from the vomit and swallwed ep they released before the nightflight album.

  5. No Bourge, no Budgie.
Big J.T. (R.I.P.) was a fine guitarist, but the songwriting whilst he was in the band lacked the drive, invention & sparkle of their classic early/mid '70's material.
Loved John's playing in the George Hatcher Band though, that seemed to be a better fit for his talents.

  6. Bit unfair to say no budgie without tony bourge,he left the band years ago,the period with john thomas was pretty good, also when craig goldy joined they were still very good live, who knows had burke shelley not fallen ill on that poland tour, maybe they would have made another album with craig goldy on guitar, that would have been worth waiting for.

  7. Not unfair, just factual. Bourge era Budgie were the equal of any of the big 'eavy bands from that time frame, (Sabs, Zep, Purple etc.), but the JT incarnation was far more pedestrian & workmanlike. Again, that's no sleight on John's abilities as a guitarist, but the songwriting magic was largely missing. Occasional exceptions such as the excellent 'I Turned To Stone' only served to highlight just how humdrum the rest of the album was. Songwriting chemistry is a tricky thing & despite the undoubted talent involved they simply didn't have the magic touch of their early days.
As you said the Craig Goldie line-up was promising indeed, I wonder if they demoed material that might surface some day?
